Strange incidents where the sky rains down odd objects, usually such as fish, frogs, or stones are called Anomalous Showers in paranormal terms. Normally, this very Fortean area of the Unexplained (Charles Fort, the granddaddy of paranormal phenomena, catalogued them exhaustively) is an area that leaves me pretty cold to be honest. Mainly it’s because of the mind-numbing repetitiveness of it. Once you’ve heard about one case where masses of frogs or fish raining down out of (usually) a clear sky, you tend to have heard them all. But there are exceptions, and this is where the sky rains down some truly frightening or grisly surprise. Very recently there was the terrifying case of spiders raining down in Brazil. As if that’s not disturbing enough, there are the numerous cases where the sky has rained blood, or human and animal body parts. I kid you not.
August 1841 – Field workers on a tobacco farm near Lebanon, Tennesee, reported blood, fat and muscle raining down. They said they had heard a rattling noise, and saw blood falling down from a red cloud which was passing overhead.
16 October 1846 – Hundreds of ducks, larks, quail and waterhen fell to the ground from the sky over Lyons, France. Some were still alive and had fallen during a repeated rain of blood. The rain-water was analysed and found to contain corpuscles, which were 35% organic.
The following day – 17 October – the same phenomenon occurred over Grenoble, France.
3 March 1876 – occurred what became known as the Kentucky Meat Shower. Beef (although some said it was more like mutton or venison) fell from the sky near Olympia Springs, Bath County, Kentucky. Dr Allan McLane Hamilton, writing in the Medical Record, said that it was lung tissue from either “a horse or human infant”.
1890 – the blood of birds rained down on an area of Calabria, Italy. Some speculated that the birds had been torn apart by violent winds, but there were no winds that day.
October 1922 – Sheffield, England, had a truly nasty surprise, when sliced flesh, blood, entrails, kidneys, hearts, lungs and mashed brains rained down on a field. All the parts were covered in a mysterious oily substance. Dismembered arms and legs were also found. This horrifying incident was witnessed by dozens of people, including a police officer.
There are many theories about what can cause an anomalous shower (of any kind), usually featuring waterspouts or unknown volcanic activity. Although why a waterspout would whip up body parts is unfathomable. Also, many of these cases occurred before the days of air travel, so human body parts falling from passing aircraft can be ruled out too. (Although that idea would be pretty horrifying too!).
In his book ‘Mysteries Of the Multiverse’ Terence Ayn suggests that it might be due to timestorms, whereby victims have got caught up in one, causing their bodies to be ripped apart. He says that timestorms are usually presaged by a strange shimmering, like a heat-haze on a very hot day, and a dark red cloud, ringed in black. The tobacco workers in Tennesee reported seeing a red cloud.
Whatever caused these horrifying events, the timestorms explanation sounds strangely just as plausible as waterspouts, volcanoes or strong winds.
